The Game’s History

When Was the Last Time the Lakers Won?

It’s been a while since the Lakers have won a championship. In fact, the last time they won was in 2010. That’s when they beat the Boston Celtics in seven games. Kobe Bryant was the Finals MVP, and it was his fifth championship with the Lakers.

Since then, the Lakers have made it to the playoffs six times, but they haven’t made it past the Western Conference Finals. In 2020, they were swept by the eventual champions, the Los Angeles Clippers, in the first round.

The Lakers have struggled since Kobe Bryant retired in 2016. They’ve had six head coaches and dealing with injuries to key players. The team has been builder through the draft, signing free agents, and making trades. In 2019, they finally got some traction and signed superstar LeBron James. The team also acquired Anthony Davis in a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans.

With James and Davis leading the way, the Lakers are once again one of the top teams in the league. They finished first in the Western Conference during the 2019-20 season with a record of 52-19. They’re currently in first place again this season with a record of 37-11.

How Many Times Have the Lakers Won?

The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most successful teams in NBA history, having won the NBA Finals a record 16 times. They have also won a record 31 conference titles, and their fans are some of the most passionate in the NBA.

Who’s Playing for the Lakers?

The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Lakers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Western Conference in the Pacific Division. The Lakers play their home games at Staples Center, an arena shared with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association, and the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League. The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in all of professional basketball, and have been so for a long time.

The franchise began with the 1947 purchase of a disbanded team, the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL). The new team began playing in Minneapolis, calling themselves the Minneapolis Lakers. Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won several championships in that league during its early years. In 1950, they joined the NBA as part of a merger between the NBL and BAA. They then won five championships in Minneapolis during that league’s respective 1950s and 1960s eras – 1960 being their first season in California after moving from Minnesota.

In 1972, despite struggling during their inaugural season in Los Angeles due to injuries to key players such as Elgin Baylor and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then known as Lew Alcindor), head coach Bill Sharman led them to their first ever NBA Championship; this was assisted much by rookie point guard Earvin “Magic” Johnson – who would eventually help lead them to 8 more Championships over his 13 seasons with them (5 coming alongside power forward James Worthy), earning 3 regular season MVP awards along they way. Following Earvin Johnson’s forced retirement due to HIV/AIDS contracted via blood transfusion prior to 1992-93 season (and James Worthy’s retirement after that same season), they struggled for much of next decade without any playoff success; this was eventually followed by Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant leading them to 3 consecutive NBA Championships from 2000-2002; this was then repeated again from 2009-2010 with another 3peat helmed by Bryant and Pau Gasol. With those 16 total Championships, they are currently tied with rivals Boston Celtics for most all-time NBA Championships by any franchise; both franchises also share having 31 total Playoff appearances apiece – which is most all-time for any team in NBA history as well. As such examples attest, The Los Angeles Lakers are truly one of – if not THE – most storied and successful franchises not just in all of professional basketball history – but also in North American sports history overall.

The current roster features many young talents such as Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball – as well as established stars such as LeBron James (signed via free agency prior to 2018-19 season) Kyle Kuzma, JaVale McGee, Rajon Rondo (signed via free agency prior to 2018-19 season), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (re-signed prior to 2018-19 season), Michael Beasley (signed via free agency prior to 2018-19 season) – along with longtime veteran role player Lance Stephenson (signed via free agency prior to 2018-19 season). Together, this star studded lineup looks poised to make another deep Playoff run – and possibly even win another Championship or three for this storied franchise over next few years. Only time will tell if that ends up happening or not; but regardless what does occur going forward – one thing is for certain: The Los Angeles Lakers are sure to remain one force be reckoned with not just in basketball world – but also sports world at large for years (if not decades) still yet to come!
