When the franchise was founded, the city of New Orleans issued bonds to fund construction of the Superdome. The team suffered their first losing season in 1971, but rebounded to win their first division title in 1987 behind head coach Jim Mora and players such as quarterbacks Bobby Hebert and Wade Wilson, running back RuebenMayes, wide receiver Michael Haynes, and linebacker Rickey Jackson; they played their home games at Tulane Stadium through 1974 before moving to the Superdome. Mora was fired three years later following a disappointing 6–9 season during which quarterback Archie Manning was injured for much of the year; his replacement was Dick Nolan. Nolan led New Orleans to three winning seasons from 1987 to 1989 but was fired following consecutive 7–9 seasons in 1990 and 1991; he was replaced by Jim E. Mora (no relation).

In 2012, after a long search process conducted by general manager Mickey Loomis that reportedly focused on candidates with head coaching experience in the NFL, New Orleans hired Sean Payton away from his position as offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys; Payton had been with Dallas since 2003 but had never been a head coach at any level prior to his hiring by New Orleans. Under Payton and quarterback Drew Brees (who joined the Saints in 2006), New Orleans has compiled five consecutive winning seasons from 2007–2011 and captured its first ever Lombardi Trophy with a victory in Super Bowl XLIV over Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 on February 7th 2010; this made them just the second ever wild card team to win a Super Bowl (after Green Bay Packers did so twice: once as a wild card team during their titles runs of 1996 & 2010), which has yet to be repeated since then & only 3 teams have won back-to-back Lombardi Trophies since then: Green Bay Packers(2010-11), Seattle Seahawks(2013-14) & Denver Broncos(2015-16).
