Salt and Sacrifice is an atmospheric puzzle game with a twist. You have to build your own puzzles by mixing in salt, water and sand until they’re just right before you can solve them. There’s some interesting ideas in here but the lack of replayability means there isn’t much staying power despite its unique premise.,

It is the year 2035, and a new virus has been released. The virus is called Salt. It’s purpose is to kill all humans on Earth. In order to stop the spread of this virus, there needs to be an army that can fight back against it. That army is called Sacrifice.

Salt & Sacrifice has a lot going for it, but it’s held down by several poor design decisions. Before purchasing, I suggest seeing some gameplay video, particularly of the game’s bosses.

After a little more than six years after the debut of Ska Studios’ distinctive 2D action RPG Salt and Sanctuary, the sequel is finally here. Was it worth the wait for Salt and Sacrifice, or should you simply stay with Elden Ring? Check out our review to learn more.

Review of Salt and Sacrifice

To be quite honest, I didn’t play the first game.

Players choose a class and a crime to commit at the outset of Salt and Sacrifice, which is the main reason you were going to be banished from the realm. Instead of being banished, you decide to join the inquisition. You go through the Magebane Rite, which allows you to track down magicians. On your route to the inquisitor camp, you are unfortunately assaulted and almost killed.

You awaken in the inquisition camp of Pardoner’s Vale. You are locked in limbo as a result of the Magebane Rite; neither alive nor dead. This is how you may battle your way back from the edge. You are instructed to hunt certain wizards after examining the camp. Other bosses exist, but you spent a significant amount of time looking for named mages.

Strange magic has poisoned the countryside all around it, driving people insane. Players must combat ghouls, bats, and other abominations from the beginning. While the battle is simple, you must utilize it correctly or you will be annihilated. You have the option to dodge or block, with the dodge going past adversaries. Light and heavy assaults are available, as well as ranged weaponry. Going on a spamming assault isn’t a good idea. I’d strike a couple times, dodge, and then attack again.

To succeed in this game, you must have patience. Do you have 10 minutes to attack the monster two or three times, evade, heal, and repeat? And, if you die, are you willing to return 10 minutes later to try again? My point is that you will die a lot if you aren’t really good at these games. Bosses may be helped by ranged weapons and magic, although their HP might be quite high. Even yet, defeating a boss for the first time is quite rewarding.

On the other hand, some of the wandering magicians are much too easy. When you confront a mage, they will often teleport across the level as you hunt them down. Then they warp after taking a certain amount of damage, and you continue the process until you kill them or discover their hiding place. I enjoy how the normal opponents and the magicians are at odds and actively attack each other. You may take advantage of this to get free hits, more treasure, or just EXP.

Leveling up and upgrading equipment is how Salt and Sacrifice handles advancement. The leveling system is similar to the grid from Final Fantasy X or Path of Exile in that you gain 1 point every level and may use it on your tree anyway you choose. Things eventually take two points, and so forth. One annoyance is that you must purchase the talent with points in order to learn how to utilize new weapons or improved versions of your present weapons. So, rather than 15 strength, you’ll require level three of excellent weaponry. I’m not a fan, but the skill tree appeals to me.

The true reason you want to pursue them as a mage hunter is for their components. Mages wield a great deal of power, and returning that power to the forge may result in new weapons, armor, and accessories. You’ll have to grind for a while, but ranking up weapons are the only way to advance. Doing 10 damage to an area’s third boss will not work unless you are really skilled. In addition, various components need different armor.

It has a Monster Hunter feel about it. You go out and hunt your prey, then return to manufacture a new weapon so you may go hunt a larger beast. Except it will be up against a lightning or ice wizard here. While I loved that aspect of it, if you dislike grinding, you will soon get bored.

It did cause me some difficulties. I experienced a few of crashes, but nothing significant was lost — except my time. The game might also be really inexpensive. A wizard was already sprinkling bubbles on me as I stepped through a door once. The bubble ruptured, propelling me back through the door, where I died. I couldn’t see anything until I went outside, and it was then that I died. That occurred many times, but with new species each time.

The most serious problem is how you are flung about after being struck by certain opponents. Bosses may be particularly harmful in this regard. With the amount of time I spent in the air being juggled, I sometimes wonder if I’ve begun playing Street Fighter. It seems cheap, like when a boss replenishes their health after a cutscene. Developers should consider if something like this is enjoyable or just irritating; I feel it is neither.
