In a world without NPCs, how do you create an RPG? The answer is to create your own character and interact with other players through their avatars. In Farwoods, every player creates his or her own avatar in the game’s custom-built engine.
The “cozy mmorpg” is a minimalistic, animalistic online RPG with no NPCs whatsoever. The game is set in a fantasy world and the player takes on the role of one of four different animals that live there.
If you’re one of those noble gamers that values gameplay above frills like graphics, we’ve discovered a forthcoming online RPG that could be worth checking out. Farwoods is the title of a game in which you play as an animal and try to make your place in the world by selecting the abilities and vocations that interest you the most.
Farwoods is an online roleplaying game set in a world of woodland animals inhabited exclusively by other players, according to Chanterelle Interactive, the game’s creator. “Create your character and go on a journey through a narrative crafted specifically for you, interlaced with the tales of many other animals surviving in this fairytale magical land.”
Farwoods’ development is unique in that you don’t have to grind for skill points. Instead, points are awarded “at fixed intervals” to allow you to do anything you want. A versatile burrow-building system is also available, allowing players to construct houses, inns, taverns, and bases.
“There are no NPCs, foes or otherwise,” says the narrator. Because character growth is not required, every fighting is PvP and needs in-character explanation.”
Farwoods is presently in the alpha stage of development.
