This morning, I woke up to the news that the Overwatch League would be taking a year-long break after the inaugural season. This news was initially broken by the Daily Dot, and later confirmed by Blizzard in a blog post.

There are no further plans to release the Overwatch League’s first season next year, it’s been confirmed by Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime. The Overwatch League is the world’s first major league for Overwatch. The first season of the OWL is due to end in June 2018. However, Morhaime says there are no plans for a yearlong season after that. Morhaime confirmed the news in an interview with ESPN, explaining that the decision was made due to the increased technical and financial requirements of the league. “We’ve always said that we’d like to have the league last a full season,” he said. “We always felt that it was important to have the season last a full season, and so we decided for that reason

As we reported earlier this week, the Overwatch League is currently taking a break from the regular season to gear up for the MLG Vegas Open, and to give the team owners time to start the process of finalizing the league’s structure. Reports have suggested that the break may last a full year, which would mean the Overwatch League wouldn’t be back next year. But Blizzard has now refuted this rumor, and has said that the league will continue to run according to their usual schedule, with the Overwatch League Finals taking place in late December.. Popcorn appropriately.

We may have some terrible news for you if you’re still a huge fan of Overwatch and the professional Overwatch League. According to GGRecon, insiders within the league have claimed that the fifth season would not begin at the normal time, but rather in 2022, when Overwatch 2 is released. That would provide a hazy launch window for the game and make some sense, but it wouldn’t be the shot in the arm the game’s ailing competitive environment needs, and it would most likely work to stifle enthusiasm.

League vice president Jon Spector responded to Twitter to deny the idea, saying that there are no present plans for a year-long break, but he did say that dates for 2022 have yet to be announced. It’s certainly conceivable that this is a false report, and the League games will go on as usual, but it’s hardly the good news that any game fan wants to hear. Then then, the phrases “good news” and “blizzard” don’t seem to go together very often these days.

It’s impossible to react to every rumor regarding our future intentions, however this report is false in this instance. We have not yet established or announced dates for our 2022 season, but in whatever scenario we are contemplating, we do not intend to take a “year-long vacation.” https://t.co/hDJwN2szb5
