Blackwind Review: A Lackluster Hack-and-Slash Experience

Blackwind is a hack-and-slash game with an unfortunate lack of polish. It’s not that the combat system or art style are poorly done – Blackwind has some genuinely good ideas, but they’re mashed together in such a hamfisted way it feels like one of those games that was made by a 12 year old on their computer while playing World Of Warcraft.

Blackwind is a hack and slash game that has a lackluster story. The gameplay is fun but the story doesn’t do much to keep players interested.

Blackwind is a budget product created by Drakkar Dev and released by Blowfish Studios that seeks to deliver on a hack-and-slash approach with “brain-teasing” puzzles in a market where AAA titles and starry indies tend to grab most of the focus.

Unfortunately, Blackwind’s experience ends up being more unpleasant and repetitious than anything else. 

Blackwind Review: A Dull Hack-and-Slash Adventure

In Blackwind, you take on the role of James Hawkins, the adolescent son of a famous scientist who has developed an Iron Man-like mech suit with an AI dubbed Blackwind. The Hawkins’ ship is knocked down by a gang of Raknos aliens while on their route to the mining planet of Medusa-42.

Professor Hawkins throws his kid into the combat mech in order for him to survive the fall, just in time for the ship to burst apart, launching Dad into the distance and leaving our little hero alone on a foreign mining colony populated with aliens.

Now, James is on his way to reuniting with his father and destroying the alien danger by fighting back the Raknos and paving his path over this mining planet.

You’ll gain upgradable weapons like blasters and energy swords, as well as abilities like melee chains and the traditional ground pound method, as you go through Blackwind. A special abilities class provides them a plethora of fighting options in addition to an outstanding weaponry. Throughout the game, you may obtain rockets, shields, a radial force explosion, and even self-healing technology.

Without getting into too much depth and disclosing all of Blackwind’s secrets, a few more hidden unlockables strewn throughout add to a stockpile of weapons and abilities that provide a variety of approaches to each sector of foes.

The Raknos, James’ extraterrestrial foes with whom he battles toe-to-toe in the quest for his lost father, have their own arsenal of weapons and skills. Stronger elite troops and tank-style foes are frequently the least of your problems, with basic alien foot soldiers and sentry weapons being the least of your concerns.

Each opponent type adds its own fighting style to the fight, as well as its own distinct vulnerability, forcing you to expand your arsenal and experiment with new strategies and techniques.

Even with such a wide arsenal of weaponry and an army of foes, Blackwind’s combat is frequently underwhelming. There are several mechanics to try out on each adversary, although the bulk of them can be simply defeated using simple ranged or melee combat. Boss confrontations are rare, yet they may easily be dispatched in within a minute or two using only the most basic techniques.

Melee combos and special powers may be useful in a pinch, but Blackwind fails to push you out of your comfort zone frequently enough to make them essential components of the battle cycle.

In terms of character enhancements and aesthetic customisation, Blackwind excels. A skill tree may be used to enhance anything from basic weaponry to special skills, boosting combat abilities by increasing damage, bullet spread, firing rate, and more.

The upgrades are undoubtedly worthwhile, and every bit of more firepower makes a difference in late-game firefights when full screens of adversaries are striking. Mech skins may also be discovered concealed around Medusa-42, giving you a wide variety of additional mech skins to pick from. 

Puzzles strewn over the environment provide variation to the experience. A drone integrated within James’ mech suit may separate, allowing you to shift between the two to trigger panels and flick switches that open the next map region. Another sort of challenge requires you to guide a drone through air vents and activate security panels while avoiding a few opponents along the way. 

The absence of direction is Blackwind’s main flaw. While your AI locates and downloads maps for many of the locations you visit, there is no global map on which to design your course and decide where to travel. The onscreen minimap helps, but with so much of Blackwind taking place in enormous military facilities with numerous floors and hundreds of similar halls, I constantly got confused and had to backtrack to locate the next goal or region.

The camera in Blackwind is likewise terribly terrible. It stays motionless for the most of the game, with no ability to turn it using a thumbstick to gain a better perspective of the surroundings. Rather of leading you to important areas and roads, Blackwind encourages you to sprint in every direction in order to identify enemy concentrations, complete levels, and proceed through the plot.

In a lot of ways, this is nostalgic, since discovering new foes is frequently the only way to know whether you’re on the right track.

Unfortunately, no amount of nostalgia can make up for how much I wish I had a globe map to guide me in the correct route. A few of the puzzles are hampered by the camera’s poor design, with shootable triggers hidden just out of view, adding needless aggravation to the problem solving process.

While Blackwind isn’t a horrible game in and of itself, the whole experience is excessively dull. Blackwind is a bland budget product that may easily be avoided due to generic settings, repetitive combat, and a maddening lack of instruction.
